“People often ask me what one thing I would recommend to restore relationship between land and people. My answer is almost always, “Plant a garden.” It’s good for the health of the earth and it’s good for the health of people. A garden is a nursery for nurturing connection, the soil for cultivation of practical reverence. And its power goes far beyond the garden gate—once you develop a relationship with a little patch of earth, it becomes a seed itself. Something essential happens in a vegetable garden. It’s a place where if you can’t say “I love you” out loud, you can say it in seeds. And the land will reciprocate, in beans.” - Robin Wall Kimmerer
"Growing food has helped me come back to myself, to know who I am beyond the grasping and unbelonging. It has shown me the many ways in which I am woven into a tapestry of being, of which we are all a part. It has allowed me to tune my ear to the call of the earth and tread on its surface with an ever-loving step. And it has shown me to walk in the footsteps of my ancestors when I couldn’t find their stories in the history books." - Claire Ratinon, Unearthed
“...and they shall beat their swords into plowshares” Isaiah 2:4
Radical Farm Camp is back for its 4th year running!!
We will learn practical organic food growing skills through hands on experience in working market gardens. We will trace Jewish histories of food and farming, engaging in ancestral practices of growing and preparing food, cooking together and enjoying delicious farm to table feasts. We will also explore the Torah of a Jewish land justice & how we might get involved in land justice struggles in the UK today. We will wake early to pray & sing in community, we will experience a proper ‘Farmer’s Shabbat’, resting together at the culmination of our retreat. We will build kindred & supportive community.
This year we are really excited to offer our Radical Farm Camp at Fivepenny Farm in Dorset.
Fivepenny Farm is a small-scale agroecological farm in the South West of England on the Devon-Dorset border, right by the beautiful Jurassic Coast. Fivepenny Farm was started in 2003 by four friends, David Saltmarsh, Kerry Haywood, Olly Goolden and Jyoti Fernandes, to be developed as a low impact mixed organic farm from bare fields.
It is the home of several land-based agroecological enterprises including Three Daughters Dairy and Springtail Farm, an amazing market garden run by Lally & Tomas.
The programme is still in formation, but there will be a mixture of practical sessions in the market garden with Lally & Tomas, as well as other land skills sessions elsewhere on the farm, alongside our explorations of jewish farming histories and jewish diasporist food cultures, and workshops exploring current UK and internationalist land-based struggles with land justice and food sovereignty organiser Jyoti Fernandes.
Accommodation will be in the newly built bunkhouse at Fivepenny's Land Skills Hub, with some camping options too. Please contact us for access info.
Food will be catered by Sima Cutting of the Kitchen Table, bringing all the goodness of the field to exquisite deliciousness on our plates. All meals provided (mostly vegan, organic and gluten-free.)
There will be snacks and a place to prepare hot drinks.
This offering is open to those who identify as jewish in the most inclusive and expansive sense; including those with jewish ancestry looking to learn more about their heritage; and those on a conversion journey.
