"This retreat gave me deep Jewish communal care, connection to the land and taught me political and queer relations to our liturgy and intellectual traditions. I am always amazed by Miknaf Haaretz’s ability to bring the land and its many beings so tangibly into our communal experiences and reflections, not allowing it to become a passive backdrop as in so many other ritual spaces. The retreat helped me to envision different forms of Jewish and non-Jewish solidarity through their invitation of diverse educators and drawing from multiple writers, allowing me to connect parts of my life which are normally separated into ‘Jewish’ and ‘Non-Jewish’ spaces. I’m not sure I’ve ever had the privilege to bond with such an amazing constellation of people."

“Sara and Samson wove together perspectives which allowed the attendees to understand how Shmita and Jewish earth-based practices can be and are approached in a number of ways - from radical political land reappropriation to reviving Mishna-era rituals. Every aspect of the retreat wove back into its ecological ethos, such as the chef who was a food-grower herself. Sara and Samson’s choice of speakers, coming from radical and inspiring projects from across the UK, drew a map for the participants for how our earth-based Jewishness could flourish across time, place and medium (from Leicester to Wales). Talmudic texts and liturgy were present in every aspect of the retreat, merging ancient text with the soil, flora and fauna of Devon in a way which invigorated my relation to Jewish sacred writings.”
